It’s funny, I was just thinking about posting this exact question.
So, for now, it seems the only way to do it is two passes… one- run image extractions on your completed/edited JPEG folder, (I’m currently using TIF, since they open / save faster, at the expense of more disk space), use the TIF file in SPA.
Maybe if Image Extractions had a “lite” version (e.g. trust this only if you don’t have balls/bats/sticks/etc. to worry about) that could be action-based only, it could work? (but then, for more complex extractions, the plugin has to be used)…
Just spitballing here, not sure if that’s a valid way to go.
Perhaps if it’s really a simple extraction, we could get most of the way there with an action that runs something like:
1 – Duplicate layer
2 – Switch to the duplicated layer
3 – Select Subject – then do any selection refinements (as automated/reliable as you can — expand selection, refine, etc.)
4 – Create a layer mask (effectively removing the background)
5 – Delete (or turn off visibility) of the original background layer
Obviously, this is only as reliable as Photoshop’s built-in select subject tool.
