    When it freezes,

    Do you have the system drive unchecked in the Photoshop scratch disk preferences? If both are checked, sometimes Photoshop will fill the system disk with scratch, and then it won’t be able to switch back to the other scratch disk.

    For troubleshooting, please run activity monitor in Mac and when it freezes again, before shutting down Photoshop, see how much available RAM and available system disk space there is.
