Sometimes the preferences get corrupted and cause strange issues.. I have seen this exact issue a few times before with other users. I think the corrupted prefs affect the Adobe folder security tokens and the plugin is not allowed to access the files when this happens. There isn’t an actual setting you can change to fix it. Resetting the preferences like you did is the only fix when it happens.
