You can do this with just player 1 and a duplacted smart object.

First add the custom sample image to the template. Then duplicate the smart object using Control+J Windows or Command+J Mac. The the smart objects will be linked together. You can resize one of them, add a smart adjustment for B&W or whatever.  Just make sure the original smart object you add to the temlate is size for the larger of the 2 images on the print and downsize the other one.  That will avoid blurring on the larger one.

When you batch SPA, you must also check the checkbox to “Use Smart Objects”. If you don’t do that then it won’t replace the image for both.
