Out of curiosity, I just researched the compatibility of WEBP.   One of the main reasons why it isn’t used much is because it isn’t supported by the Safari web browser which is the default browser on Macs and iPhones.  So if you are displaying WEBP images on the internet then iPhone and Mac users who are using Safari won’t be able to view the images.
