No reason it shouldn’t work if you do it correctly. In the template developers kit, there is a file that has 300 smart objects already. You should be able to resize the canvas in that file. Then you will need to resize the smart objects. Then you will need to resize the graphics file too. Remember form the videos that the template consists of the graphics file PSD and the smart object PSD. It needs both to run.
