I had updated the driver before trying anything – I went back and reset the Photoshop preferences and turned on the GPU rendering and the error is gone. Not sure if it was updating the driver or resetting the settings – but, as a FAQ, do both of those if you are running into a force close and you should be good (or at least I am!).
