Facepoints for plugins instructions

About FACEPOINTS

Facepoints is a stand alone “helper” application for the Pixnub SPA, EZ TEam Builder and face Crop plugins. It runs outside of the Photoshop and communicates to the plugins. It does the face detection process instead of the plugins automatically during the batches. The advantages of using facepoints are as follows.

  • Faster processing – The face detection steps tun MUCH fasters with the  Facepoints option on. Note: Facepoints can only do face detection natively on JPG, PNG, and WEBP images.  SPA and Face Crop can still run with facepoints with PSD and TIF cutotuts, but will lose most or all of the speed gains because the plugin will have to save a temp copy of each file as a jpg, have Facepoints do the face detection on the JPG, and then apply the data to the TIF or PSD.  So it is highly recommend to use PNG or WEBP for cutouts and not TIF or PSD.
  • Compatibility – One of the biggest issue with the plugins has been GPU compatibility between the computer and Photoshop causing face detection failures and/or Photoshop crashing. Using Facepoints eliminates many of those issues because it doesn’t use the GPU in Photoshop.  You can even turn off the GPU to be on in Photoshop.  So if you are having GPU compatibility issues for any reason in Photoshop, even if not face detection related, you may be able to still run Photoshop without the GPU on. Prior to Facepoints, this wasn’t possible because the plugins needed the GPU to be on.
  • Accuracy – We are still refining the face detection model. Currently, it should be at least on par with the older face detection method right now. Eventually, we expect it to considerably better then the older non-facepoints model.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Install the Facepoints app.
  2. Install the latest releases of SPA, EZ Team Builder, and/or face Crop.
  3. Create an empty folder (any name) anywhere on a local drive of your computer. NO NOT use a network or cloud drive. Also, if your desktop is connected to iCloud or Windows One Drive, it’s best to not use that either as the OS will try ton continually sync the desktop files as Facepoints and the plugins are writing small text instructions back and forth. The best location is on the root of the system drive as that drive will normally be the fastest….. for example C:Facepoints Data, or a folder directly under the Mac System drive.
  4. Open the Facepoints app.
  5. Select the data folder you just made.
  6. Press Start. You will then see a green bar that says “running”. It is now looking for images.
  7. Open the Plugin.
  8. From the plugin Home menu, click on Facepoints setup.
  9. Select the same folder you selected in the Facepoints app
  10. Optional… but goo to do for the first time – Click the Test Connection button. If it says Connection successful then it is ready to run.
  11. MAC NOTE: Depending on the folder location, the first time you run Facepoints, OSX Gatekeeper may ask you to allow the app to access files in the folder. If you get that message then you will need to click Allow. If you don’t see that message then just try to run a batch or build a team with Facepoints on (even if Connections failed). It may take a few images before OSX pops up the message. once you click Allow, OSX will remmebr and it won’t ask you again.
  12. You can now minimize Facepoints to the taskbar or dock. You don’t need to do anything else with the app. You can just leave it running if you want. it doesn’t use any system resources until is gets a face detection task sent to it. Just make sure to minimize it and not close it. You should see the icon in the Start menu on Windows or Dock on mac.
